Lisa’s Story!

For many of us finding a fitness pursuit that becomes something we enjoy or even love, can be tough. Before Fit Body Boot Camp, Lisa felt lost and bored with her fitness program. She had spent a year or two trying to convince herself that she loved to run for cardio.  She found it unexciting and repetitive with no variety other than the music. When she was worn out with that, she began weight lifting. Weights were more enjoyable than running but she still didn’t love them…”I would plug in my headphones, follow a plan, and go to work. There was no community. Most people who lift do it on their own.”

We are glad that Lisa found FBBC when she did. She was inspired to pursue a fitness journey by her friends, coworkers, and her husband Cory.  Cory is “amazing and hard to keep up with…but I’m trying. I want my kids to have a mom who plays, runs and teaches them why our health is so important” .

No journey is without obstacles…Lisa has to work to balance her schedule and she had to overcome a lack of confidence.   “I had never really been the athletic type so many activities were very intimidating to me (inside and outside of the gym). I also struggled with comparison. It is is really hard to realize that everyone’s journey is different. What works for one may not for another, but FBBC looks at everyone’s journey to see what will work”  then there is the time commitment piece…

“I commute to St. Cloud for work every day. That takes two hours sitting in the car daily.  So we have to schedule it. It is just part of the plan each and every week.  Plan out when and where you get your activity and how you fit in your sessions. I try to get to a minimum of 4 sessions if not 5 each week”

Once Lisa, Cory and their family got into a routine things smoothed out for her and she began seeing results.

Lisa says, “I can’t speak more highly about FBBC. This community means so much to me. From trying out a 3 week mini challenge at the end of summer last year, to now. It has quite simply changed my life and the lives of my family. Fitness and activity are a part of everyday now. I have found amazing friendships that I was challenged finding due to busy community/ work/ family schedules”.

And speaking of overcoming obstacles…Lisa says she is about to face her biggest challenge yet. “I set the goal that 2018 was the year that I would step out of my comfort zone. I am not an extrovert by any means. I have now done the FBBC Amazing Race, signed up for the Rugged Maniac, AND With a little push from a great friend and coaches, I signed up for the “My First Tri”.  These things are all beyond that comfort zone”

Maggie’s Story

Do you ever feel tired, worn out or moody and really don’t know why. You think to yourself “I haven’t done anything too strenuous so why do I feel so tired. I just want to sleep”. Surprisingly this happens to a lot of people. When you don’t eat properly and don’t get some kind of exercise, believe it or not, your body becomes tired.

This was a conversation I had with one of my clients, Maggie. She actually worked out to at home videos but they just didn’t work for her. She would get bored and lose motivation so she wouldn’t stick to it. She told me that prior to joining FBBC she felt so tired all the time.

“I was constantly feeling run down. I lacked the energy to keep up with the kids and often took naps when they did. I was often crabby and short tempered.”

People get confused with exercise. They think it tires them out. Of course your body will get tired with a great workout but it’s very different from what we’re talking about here. When you exercise on a regular basis you will have more energy to do the things you need to in life. Maggie is a perfect example of this. Just look at some of things she has accomplished now.

“Last year, I trained for my first triathlon and finished within my goal times. I had never thought that I would be able to something like that in my adult life! This year a few of us from the studio ran the Spartan race. It was a very tough race, but as a team we all crossed the finish line. I have a few more runs scheduled for the fall.”

Remember, prior to starting with FBBC she couldn’t do any of this. She just didn’t have the energy. In addition to these wonderful races, Maggie told me that this winter she plans to get back into snowboarding with her son.

“A stronger, better fueled body has allowed me to explore so many amazing things.”

One of the great things about Maggie changing her lifestyle is that she is passing that on to her own family. She even talks about her grandmother giving her inspiration to be better and stronger.

“I wanted to show my kids that I could stick to a program, lose the extra weight, change my diet for the better and to have more energy. By learning these skills for myself, I was passing on a healthy lifestyle to them. The second inspiration was my Grandmother. I looked at her and saw a woman that was so strong mentally but was lacking the physical power to do much for herself anymore. I knew that I did not want to end up in a body that no longer functioned at it’s best and I knew that the sooner I started the better!”

I can feel the emotions just in that statement alone. It’s amazing to hear the change in Maggie and to see how she is sharing this change with others.

As a bonus to Maggie she has met some great people and made new friends. Many of our members tell me this. We are such a great family it really is awesome.

“The best thing that has happened to me since joining the FBBC family is that I can now say that I get to work with all of these amazing people! It is truly a blessing to be able to get to know all of the clients at the gym and to get to work with them. I love it when you can get a client through a new movement that they thought wasn’t possible. Such a great feeling.”

Denise D’s Story!

When a client has made great progress with us we ask them a variety of questions about their journey with the purpose of being able to share their stories and inspire you.

Sometimes clients send back their responses in such a well-written series of statements, almost like an essay, that I can’t help but share it just as is.

Denise D is one of those clients.

Her story, in her words, is simply too true and hilariously written for me to not share it as is.

I was a “militant non-exerciser” – that is to say that I downplayed and mentally ridiculed people who talked about going to the gym all the time.  They just seemed pretty sanctimonious. Not to say I never was in shape. I swam butterfly in high school, was on college, graduate school, and adult ski teams, swam water ballet in college (hardest sport I ever did), and have always golfed.  But flat out exercise??? No way. Maybe a smattering of failed attempts here and there. I collapsed running laps in middle school while on the basketball team, and swore I’d never run again on purpose – unless someone made me.  (I’m sure I was dehydrated – in the Caribbean, outside in the afternoon, running on an asphalt court – all before the emphasis on water…). Most exercise involved running. Wasn’t doing it. Still don’t want to. I think that may have affected my attitude toward exercise???

And I really bristled when people posted about their gym accomplishments on FB.  If you’re doing it for yourself, great. Stop cramming it down the rest of our throats. Defensive??? Perhaps…

So fast forward to me as a 55 year old. My doctor told me, every time I went in for an annual physical (or anything, really), that I needed to lose weight and exercise.  “Please get down to at least the top end of the normal BMI range, ok? Do you know what that is? You can start with just losing 10%. That is shown to make a health difference. Have you ever thought of Weight Watchers? A lot of my patients have good luck with that.” [Yep.  Been through the program. Four times – the first time when I was 16… And I did Slimgenics 11 years ago and lost 56 pounds in 6 ½ months, fully intending to start exercising once the weight came off. Then I went on the road 80% of the time for the following 10 years and got to where I was.].  So after not listening to the doctor of late, I have stopped going in for annual physicals. If you pay a professional then don’t take their advice, why go?

And I had been dodging the camera at all costs for at least 3 years.  If there was a group picture to be taken, I made sure I was in the back row with my head poking through.  If someone happened to get a picture of me and tagged me on FB, I religiously untagged myself. Hubby and family definitely got the message to take no pictures of me.  And my clothes sizes just kept creeping up. Suits are expensive, so no small thing. Then even the large sizes wouldn’t let the buttons close.

And then I realized that these were things that my mom had been doing for a long time before she died of a heart of attack at age 74.  That was 19 years older than I was. That’s not a very long runway from where I was sitting.

And sitting, I was. I had started my own business, home officing, in July before I started at FBBC in September.  Do you know how little you have to walk when you work at home in a job that has you on the computer or phone all day? Even the kitchen for coffee and bathroom for, well, you know… are very close.  Even my printer was now right at my knee. Not. Very. Many. Steps.

And those persistent FB pop-ups from FBBC! Finally, without any knowledge whatsoever about what I was getting into, I signed up for the Fall Fitness Challenge. No trial class. No one I knew who went there.  Just jumped into the deep end of the pool with a vision to lose 75 pounds eventually. FBBC was waaaaaay more expensive than anything else I knew about, so I figured I’d get started there then move to someplace else once I got into a groove, or on my way. And here I am 14 months later

1- How were you emotionally, physically and mentally before FBBC and what has changed?

Hmm…

Physically I was not strong. Didn’t really know how “not strong” I was until after I started at FBBC. And I had NO IDEA how poor my balance had become.  Could that have been part of the reason that I broke my hand the November before when I tripped? Perhaps. There is a high percentage of broken bones once one hits 50.  In part because of reduced bone density (not my issue). In part, I’d bet, because of poor balance. I hadn’t slept well (read more than 5 hours) in years. My skin had issues. And let’s just say it out loud – I was, um, fat. I can couch it in lots of terms: Obese according to the medical charts. Had moved up to the Women’s section at the stores (plus sizes – ugh. Just the entry sizes, but still!!!). And I wasn’t fit enough to feel confident enough to want to DO things anymore.  Time to take the dock in? Let’s schedule it when my 22-year-old son could help my husband. Thinking about a trip to the Boundary Waters? How about if hubby would go with his guy friends instead of me – I’m sure that would be more fun for him anyway. Put on the snow shoes and go tromp on the lake? That sounds REALLY cold! Skiing in January? Can’t we wait until it’s a little warmer? And when was the last time the canoe was even in the water??? Any excuse would do. Reading a book with a glass of wine in my hand ALWAYS sounded better. (Ok, that still sounds pretty nice, actually.)

Mentally I think was still in pretty good shape.  I do a lot of heady work, so that never got the opportunity to slide.  Though I’m sure that more years of not enough sleep would eventually trash that.

Emotionally, I was sick of hiding.  I was pulling into a shell just because of how I looked.  I was embarrassed. When I looked around a room, I almost always pegged myself as the heaviest.  This was perhaps an underlying reason that I left my really great job as a consultant with Gallup. I was in front of rooms of people – leading discussions, giving presentations, and giving speeches on most days.  It was starting to feel like I didn’t belong there because of how I looked. I thought about a statement that I read about sort criteria someone used when choosing to hire a consultant… physically fit appearance was high on the list.  It reflected discipline and establishing high goals for oneself. OK. That wasn’t me anymore.

Today I am strong.  I am physically strong (my kids gave hubby grief that I was the athletic one in the family now, even though he started going to the gym last January – and he spends 2 hours there whenever he goes!) and mentally stronger. Emotionally I’m still on my journey since I still have a long way to go to hit my goal.  I think what I posted on our FBBCMG group page is a pretty good indication of where I am:

A revelation on vacation: I started at FBBC 14 months ago to lose 75 pounds and to get smaller a different way. I’m down 40… Haven’t hit “goal” yet but have stumbled (or rather didn’t stumble) upon the benefits of being FIT. I’m stronger. I said “Yes, let’s do it” to a tough 4 mile bike ride followed by a difficult 1 mile hike in the dark over broken lava (each way) to see an AMAZING lava flow. I said yes to a 2-tank scuba dive when in the past it was one tank (on the second tank we got to swim with a 30′ whale shark!) I hiked up and down Diamond Head volcano and then said, “Sure. Let’s walk the 2 miles to the beach” instead of taking an Uber. (On our walk we found there was going to be a Phillip Phillips concert on that end of the beach in 4 hours…)

I have never given any credit (or thought, really) to the benefits of being FIT. Today I can proudly say that I get it.

And I will still SLOWLY lose those other @#$! 35 pounds. Thanks Megan, Abby, and all the rest of the Fitbody family.

 

2- What or who is your inspiration? Tell me about this.

What was my inspiration? Perhaps fear of dying young. Perhaps wanting to regain confidence. Perhaps watching my previously-competitive-Irish-dancing daughter start to behave physically like me and gain weight (OK, maybe it was the Freshman 20…). I was tired of hiding – that wasn’t me. And really? Since I only saw hubby who home offices in the same office I do every day, it was a way to get out and see other humans in person.  A little bit of a lot of things.

 

3- How do you balance your work life, family life and your day to day agendas with fitting time in for yourself at FBBC?

FBBC is a part of my day to get out of the house! If it’s a low energy day at my desk, I take off at “lunch” and hit the noon class. Since intermittent fasting has become my norm, I drink a protein shake at 11, so midday is open (no eating time needed…) I’m lucky as both of my kids are adults now (though my oldest, my son, still lives – and eats – at home), so I have more flexibility to be selfish and take time for myself.  It also helps A LOT that hubby goes to the gym also (though not as often as I do.) We talk about what moves our respective trainers are asking us to do. We complain about which muscle groups hurt. We pick vacation hotels that have gyms and actually go together and use them. And I love that FBBC has so many time options. (Though I wish there was an earlier Saturday one as many times it would be easier to fit in other plans if this was done sooner.) I’m pretty committed to showing up at least 4 times a week, and I try for 5. Seems to be working as I’ve been at it for 14 months!

And it’s only an hour door to door.  Not a bad investment in myself – and then it’s one fewer hour that I have to think about not drinking my wine in the cellar! (Ok, wine closet…)

 

4- What is your overall experience with FBBC?

It’s great that it is about a lifestyle change and being fit – a totally different mindset that I had entering. The transition is still a journey… My experience has definitely gotten better over time as I’ve gotten to know the coaches – some of them pretty well. Now I look forward to seeing who is there coaching, and usually chatting with her. It’s nice to go someplace where the leader in the room looks genuinely happy to see that I’m there – and knows my name. But honestly, it started off pretty rocky. My first coach assignment didn’t really connect, and thankfully Jackson sort of stepped in an picked me up.  Since I was just starting, that was important and probably a turning point. My first challenge did not deliver the results I was expecting either. I believe there were tears at weigh in… Coming to terms with the slow progress when one is over 50 has been tough to swallow. Working on that. I think the entire FBBC knows I’m working on that.

Every so often it strikes me that I’m usually the oldest person in the room. It doesn’t change how I do the work – so that’s good.  Just an odd realization… Kim’s success and passion is a great role model!

 

5- What is the biggest obstacle/challenge you have had to overcome at FBBC and how did you get through it?

I think the biggest obstacle is the incredibly slow progress on losing weight and really size.  I keep working on coming to terms with the benefits of being fit and strong, not just smaller. But I still want to be smaller!

I think many of us can really relate to wanting to be a smaller size but a lot of that is really negative media influence.  We need to celebrate being fit, strong and healthy because that’s what it is really all about.

Cat’s Story

We have all heard that exercise has an impact on mood AND that if we like what we are doing not only does the exercise go much better but also our mood improves too! Exercise is a critical part of our self care. Not only because it improves all of our physiological functions but also it is a big factor in better mental health.

Prior to joining FBBC, our client Cat, was definitely in a slump with regards to fitness. She says, “For years I had been a member at LifeTime—had joined a Bootcamp, but the prohibitive cost of their program, and the lack of community, forced me out the door. Because I didn’t have a regular routine, I was feeling low, depressed, tired, and frustrated with myself. I had recently moved to Plymouth, so I knew no one in the area. After stuffing my feelings with popcorn at the movie theater, I walked into FBBC and met Rachael. My selective memory has me kicking ass the next morning at a session. Rachael has reminded me that it took awhile before I actually showed up…for REAL. I thank her for her patience and support. Fourteen months later, I write these words.”

Cat’s inspiration to take care of herself comes from her late father. She knows when she prioritizes herself and her health she can show up better in all areas of her life. “My dad died almost ten years ago. My mom spoke at his funeral, as did my three siblings and I. People wrote to us later that they left the service vowing to be better husbands, better fathers, better men. Before my dad died, he said to us, ‘In the end, NOTHING matters besides WHO you loved, and who loved YOU.’ The love we learned growing up—the love we continue to give each other—is what inspires me, guides me; it sits at the center of my gratitude and is what keeps me motivated to constantly strive to be my best version of daughter, sister, aunt and friend.”

From the outset of joining FBBC my goal was to lose 10lbs, feel empowered/ proud of myself so I could be a better Catherine to others.  Looking back of the year, Cat did lose the 10lbs but she did more than that because she also dropped 5% body fat, added lean mass and lost 2.25 inches from her waist. She says, “My new goals center around keeping the weight off- creating a new normal- also learning how to prepare and cook great food. I want to continue to push myself in different races/runs/active events. I want to be a Coach at FBBC, but need to figure out when I’m going to study for the test. Gulp.”

For Cat, her biggest challenge is the “balancing act called life” She says she has noticed that, “A new pattern in my life is that each day begins with me asking myself, ‘Which session are you going to go to today?’ I know that other commitments will have to jockey their way around this main commitment.”

Throughout her life, Cat is constantly focusing on new behaviors vs falling into old behaviors. She is prioritizing avoiding happy hours, events that revolve around drinking, and her greatest nemesis: nicotine. “I am genetically ripe for cancer, heart disease, depression, alcoholism; therefore, I have a constant focus (often struggle) to keep helping my chances to avoid these diseases. How do I get through it? By continuing to move forward—by continuing to ask myself, Who do you want to be?”

This is HUGE! Congratulations Cat. When we make and keep the commitments to ourselves it is that much easier for everything else to fall into place…

Cat says that it is more than just a physical transformation that has occurred for her at Fit Body Boot Camp.  Her overall experience is “a journey/transformation from unfocused to focused; from self-negation to self-affirmation; from feeling lost to feeling centered. The best thing that has happened to me since joining FBBC is the community that I have built, which truly is the center of this organization. One of the mornings this week, I drove up for the 6:00 am session and saw four women walking together from their cars. I smiled and felt a tangible sense of happiness and strength. What’s most amazing about MY STORY is that it’s everyone’s story who is a FBBC member. We all had reasons we walked in the door. We all have reasons that we continue to walk in the door—some days with our fears and our sadnesses; other days with our smiles and our laughter. Megan and Megan’s FBBC Team has created this safe haven for all of us to gather and support each other. I feel extremely blessed to be connected to such an amazing group of strong, beautiful women. The journey has just begun…”

Cat you’ve been client of the month. You’ve been a smiling and welcoming face to new Fit Bodies. You’ve inspired others on their journey and yet the journey has just begun…

In your time with us you’ve learned much about prioritizing yourself and your health and we are so proud of you and all you’ve accomplished.

You Can Choose a New Thought

Happy Friday!

A lot of success comes from repetition.

Repeatedly doing the things that are necessary to reach our goals.

Following a process.

Staying consistent.

But a BIG part of our success comes from our beliefs about ourselves as well.

What if you could choose to create different beliefs by practicing better thought patterns?

You can.  Do you believe me?

Let’s break it down.

Many of you, as clients, have heard us talk about how we learn: from gross to fine.  Meaning we learn how to do a thing by first getting the broad strokes of a thing and then refining or finessing the movement or skill over time..

You may be familiar with Maslow and the stages of learning.

The two tie together.

Unconscious Incompetence: where we don’t even know what we don’t know.

Conscious Incompetence: when we realize there’s a lot we don’t know.

Conscious Competence: when we start to know how to do things but have to think about it and be deliberate in order to execute.

Unconscious Competence: when it flows, when we don’t even have to think about how to do the thing, we just do it.

As we are learning we go through these stages, with all things.

It is the same with thought patterns.

We are not our thoughts.

We can actually practice thinking new ones.

​It can take some work and some practice- particularly if we have persistent thought patterns that are negative and have been our viewpoint for a long time.

But isn’t it worth it?
To take the time and practice being kind to yourself?
To say nice things to yourself? ​

The next time you pass a mirror, why don’t you try saying something nice (in your head or aloud) to yourself.

Instead of noticing whatever could be better or finding a flaw, point out the things that are great.

The next time you have an oops in life, be kind to yourself rather than verbally assaulting yourself.

Practice.

Practice.

Practice.

Over time, gradually, slowly, the pattern will change and you’ll training yourself into a new habit.

You can do it.

Penny’s Success Story

Back in March of last year we had our Little Black Dress Challenge and wow what an amazing turn out that was. I love setting up these challenges and watching everyone work so hard to achieve their goals. The team work and excitement shared amongst everyone is so inspiring.

But as we were about to start this challenge I received a phone call and email from a lady that wanted to participate. Unfortunately, she had procrastinated (in her words) so long that she missed the orientation and the challenge was beginning the next day from our conversation. However, this gal was so determined that she begged and pleaded with me to “please allow” her to join.

Penny Forchas is this fabulous gal I’m speaking of. Take a look at what she did to ensure she started the challenge, which I’m so happy she did.

“In the two years prior to coming to FBBC I had spent a lot of time on the couch and ate a lot of comfort food! I did not have a regular fitness plan. I walked a lot and went to Yoga from time to time. I had quit the gym I had been going to a year ago.

I had been receiving the FBBC newsletter on my email account for some time. One day in February “The Little Black Dress Challenge” email came. I thought about trying it. I was depressed about my weight and in turn not very happy in general. I avoided going out and seeing people that knew me when I was a couple sizes smaller and way more outgoing as a person.

I called and emailed Megan. Megan said it was kind of late for the March challenge as I had procrastinated so long I had missed the orientation and the first day of the challenge was the next day. After begging and pleading and reading a lot of information Megan agreed to let me start. The last day of the challenge was on my birthday and I really wanted the next year to start out different than the last two.”

I could tell Penny was motivated and she proved to me that she could be there day one and do her best. Wow, I’m so glad we talked that day because what a difference in her now. Not only has her body changed but her attitude and happiness too.

Penny worked hard even though it was a little challenging at times, but she set her goal and she conquered it.

“I went to the workouts 4-5 times a week and followed the meal plan. By the end of the challenge I had reached my goals! I have lost over 20 lbs., several inches, and my body fat is well into a healthy range!
My self-esteem is back!

In the beginning I wasn’t sure I would be able to do the workouts and the gym was 5 miles from my house. I just kept reading my affirmations and goals every day. I was encouraged by the people I met. I love that the workouts are always different. No one is judgmental and everyone is so supportive!

Since FBBC I have become more self-confident and outgoing. One day recently I was thinking “people seem so friendly lately”. I really believe that because I am happier in my life I smile more and reach out to others and that in turn brings smiles back.”

You Get To Choose

Hello!
What if I told you that in part (or fully) your response to what’s going on in your environment is a choice.
Would you believe me?
Would that be good news or bad?

I hope good news.

When you want something to get better- in any area of your life– you can choose to focus on what’s already going well and build on that OR you can dwell on the negative.

It is your choice.

Don’t get me wrong, the choice won’t always be easy.
The positive won’t always be easy to find.

With practice it gets easier and with the law of focus: what we focus on we find, your situation will improve.
What does the law of focus mean? When we seek out the positive aspects and place our attention on them we will find more of the positive to see and appreciate.

Will you try it this week?

Focus on what’s going well:

  • The parts of your body that feel good
  • The good moments you are having
  • The blessings you have
  • The food on your table
  • The safety and security you have

…and so on and so forth.

There is so much that is positive, when you come to think about it.

If you are struggling to meet your goals, pick ONE area for improvement and find 4 things that are going well.
Work on that one thing, get excited about the four and then repeat the process.

This process works.
